6 Hot Dog Styles Made for National Hot Dog Day

Four finished hot dogs on a black slate plate.

National Hot Dog Day, observed on July 22, is a day to celebrate the summertime staple on a bun. There are plenty of fun, unique, and easy ways to enjoy all that this day has to offer!

We’re grilling hot dogs for our favorite people – family, friends, and neighbors alike. We could quickly grill some franks and serve with ketchup and mustard, but since this is a special day, let’s get creative this time around. Thanks to the versatility of hot dogs, there are lots of fun toppings and combination options out there. We’ve put together some of our favorite toppings and combos and are excited to share with you six different hot dog recipes for you to enjoy.

So, heat up your gas grill and let’s do this!

  1. Easy Chili Dog (Courtesy: Kraft Foods)
What do you get when you mix a hot dog and chili? Well, yeah, a chili dog! Two delicious staples combined in this simple recipe will make you feel like you’re back at the ballpark. All you’re asked to do is grill the franks, place it in the bun, and then top with your favorite chili, cheese, and onions – all in approximately 15 minutes. You can’t go wrong with this classic!
  2. Hot Dogs with a Kick
  3. Nacho Dog
Love nachos? Then, why not top your hot dog with nachos. Layer crumbled tortilla chips throughout the grilled hot dog before adding shredded cheese, salsa, and sour cream. Then, you’re all set. Want to take it the extra mile? Substitute the shredded cheese with warm melted cheese. Trust us, this one will be hard to resist.
  4. BLT Dog
Not to enter the hotly debated “is a hot dog a sandwich?” discussion or anything, but if a BLT isn’t a sandwich, then we don’t know what is! You can never go wrong with some perfectly crispy bacon, especially on a delicious grilled hot dog. But bacon is even better when accompanied by other satisfying toppings. In this case, a bacon wrapped hot dog with lettuce, tomatoes, and a little mayonnaise creates a hot dog experience like you’ve never had before.
  5. Chicago-Style Dog
You may know Chicago is serious about its deep-dish pizza, but they’re quite serious about creatively delicious hot dogs, too. The Chicago-style hot dog is notorious for the number of toppings required to pull off this iconic barbecue food item. Best served on a poppy seed bun, this dog is topped with fresh tomatoes, pickles, yellow mustard, chopped onions, relish, pickled peppers, and a sprinkle of celery salt. Exhale. You still with us? Good. Now try not to be too full after devouring this fun dog.
  6. Memphis Dog
Hungry for barbecue food? Then, you’ll thoroughly enjoy this dog that comes from the barbecue-famous Memphis, Tennessee. Topped with pulled pork, coleslaw, and barbecue sauce, this hot dog is a mouthwatering option that will make you feel like you’re at the center of one of the most popular U.S. barbecue cities.

We hope we expanded your hot dog horizons a bit on this National Hot Dog Day. And, don’t forget before firing up the grill to check to see if you have enough propane. If not, use our propane finder to stock up today!
