Grilling and Memorial Day Bring Families Together

Grilling and Memorial Day Bring Families Together

Formed in the years following the Civil War and originally referred to as Decoration Day, Memorial Day was observed for more than 100 years on May 30, which is when it falls this year. Decoration Day activities could include washing, painting, planting flowers, and leaving tokens at the graves of loved ones. The tradition was, and still is, most prevalent in the United States’ Southern Appalachian region, and involves family members gathering in groups on that date to perform grave decorating activities. In 1971 Congress standardized the holiday as Memorial Day and changed its observance to the last Monday in May.

Memorial Day has also long been considered the official start to summer. As America’s leading propane tank-exchange brand, and one most associated with summer propane grilling, we’re proud of our ties to this special holiday. Recognizing our nation’s heroes is one of the most important things we can do as Americans, and one way to do that is to share a special time with family and friends.

There was a cool and rainy start to 2022 in many parts of the country. The sun is starting to shine just in time for all of us to recognize our nation’s heroes. We’re looking forward to doing so around the grill with family and close friends, and we know so many more out there intend to do the same. Here are a couple of recipes to consider on Memorial Day.
