Make Special with Memories Dad this Father's Day

Make Special with Memories Dad this Father's Day

Celebrated each year on the third Sunday of June, Father’s Day is set aside to help us recognize and thank Dad for the many things he’s done for us.

But first, did you know Sonora Smart Dodd is responsible for founding the national holiday in 1910? The daughter of an American Civil War veteran, she held her father in high esteem, helping raise her younger brothers after her mother died in childbirth. When Sonora learned about the newly created Mother’s Day during a Sunday sermon, she recommended a similar holiday for our nation’s Dads. She suggested her father’s birthday of June 5 as the perfect day to hold it, but local officials chose the third Sunday in June instead. President Richard Nixon established permanent national observance of the holiday in 1972.

Back to present day, what plans do you have for Dad this Father’s Day? There are plenty of great ways to celebrate him — many at low or even no cost. Here are a couple of ideas to consider this year.

  • Play ball! When was the last time you played catch with Dad? Sure, he may have lost a little zip on his fastball, but so have you. You’re never too old to dust off the glove and toss the ball with Dad. Unable to play catch? Consider going to a ballgame or watching one on TV with him instead.
  • Have a home improvement project you’ve been putting off? Let’s not forget that Dad was the one who explained the difference between a hammer, screwdriver, and saw, and then took the time to show you how to safely use each one. You may be surprised by just how willing and how excited Dad might be if you ask for his help.
  • Work on a puzzle together. Whether it’s a simple puzzle he can complete with the grandkids or something a little better suited for his adult children, puzzles are a fun way to accomplish something together. Now, does anyone know where that missing piece is?
  • Start a new tradition! It’s never too late to start a new and meaningful family tradition. Get everyone involved in the brainstorming process and start something your family can enjoy and remember for generations to come.

Dad’s also the one who taught you the difference between spatulas, skewers, brushes, and tongs. That’s why we’d be remiss if we didn’t also mention grilling with or for Dad this Father’s Day weekend. Don’t be afraid to put your propane grilling skills to the ultimate test! After all, Dad always has your back.

Here are a couple of great recipes to try Father’s Day weekend or anytime throughout the year!

Blue Cheese Burgers with Grilled Pineapple

Blue Cheese Burgers with Grilled Pineapple If your Dad likes pineapples, he’ll love the tangy sweetness of grilled pineapple added to his burger. Blue cheese? Yes, please!

Grilled Bratwurst with Onions Braised in Beer and Mustard

Of course, the thing Dad wants most on Father’s Day is plenty of propane to feed his hungry family. Fortunately for him, we have thousands of retailer locations nationwide where you can exchange an empty propane tank for a fresh, cleaned, and leak-tested Blue Rhino. Don't forget Blue Rhino Home Delivery is now available in nearly 20 U.S. cities.

He’s not interested in the tie. Not this year, not any year. Do Dad a favor this Father’s Day and spend some time with him around the grill.
